Gay Marriage

Kim Davis has been held in contempt of court and ordered to jail time until she is willing to issue marriage licenses again. In the months since the Supreme Court made same-sex marriage legal in all 50 states, Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis has refused to issue a single marriage license. This has stirred up quite a bit of controversy that has now spread throughout the entire country. In case you have missed it, here is a timeline of the recent events:

  • June 26: Supreme Court rules that same-sex marriage is legal in all 50 states.
  • June 29: Kim Davis refuses to issue a single marriage license.
  • June 30: Both protesters and supporters of Davis started gathering outside the county office.
  • July 2: Davis was sued by four couples, two homosexual and two heterosexual.
  • July 9: Kentucky governor Steve Beshear told county clerks they needed to either begin issuing marriage licenses again or resign from their jobs.
  • August 12: Judge David Bunning ruled Davis needed to begin issuing marriage licenses.
  • August 13: Davis still refuses to issue licenses, in direct defiance of the judge’s order. Attorneys on behalf of Davis filed an appeal and requested the ruling be delayed.
  • August 26: Davis’ appeal is denied by the court.
  • August 28: Davis asks the Supreme Court to get involved and rule on her behalf.
  • August 31: Davis’ request is rejected by the Supreme Court.
  • September 1: Marriage licenses continue being denied by Kim Davis.
  • September 3: Davis was held in contempt of court and sent to jail.

Why Hasn’t She Been Fired?

Many people are saying Davis should simply be fired for not fulfilling her duties as a county clerk. Some are wondering why she hasn’t been fired already. The reason for this is simple: she was elected as county clerk. She cannot be fired from this job. She can be impeached, but that is the only way she can be removed from office. However, it is not likely she will be impeached. However, since she has now been sent to jail over her refusal to issue the licenses, she may decide that the battle is simply not worth fighting anymore.

Why Is She Refusing to Issue Licenses?

Davis claims she is refusing to issue licenses because doing so goes against her Christian faith. She feels the Bible strictly prohibits same-sex marriages or relationships, so she thinks it goes against her religious beliefs to issue same-sex marriage licenses. Many are wondering why she has refused to issue any marriage licenses at all. She has said it’s because she doesn’t want anyone to accuse her of discrimination.

Troubled Marital Past

Attention is now being drawn to the fact that Davis herself has had some trouble in the marriage department. She has been married a total of four times and has two children from outside of marriage. However, Davis has said she was not a Christian during those times. She claimed that once she gave her life to Jesus, she has not had marital issues. Still, people have had a hard time seeing how someone with so many marriages in the past can judge others for not having the type of relationship she agrees with.

How Is This Going to End?

This is a case that is being watched closely by both supporters and protesters of Davis. Supporters are applauding her decision to remain defiant and for standing up for what she believes in. Protesters are saying she needs to do her job and stop discriminating against people who simply want to get married. No one knows how this is going to play out for sure, but chances are Davis will fold before the courts do. This is especially true now that she is spending her time in jail.
