The battle to obtain equal marriage rights in Wyoming began as early as 1977, when the state legislature prohibited the recognition of same sex marriage in the state. Over the years, many attempts have been made on both sides to control the outcome of same sex marriage law in Wyoming. Wyoming gay marriage activists have no doubt been frustrated over the continuous stalling of marital equality regardless of gender, especially when other states are beginning to allow same sex couples the right to marry.
It can be very disheartening for homosexual couples in Wyoming to be unable to plan their wedding unless they’re willing to travel to another state that can legally perform gay marriages. Additionally, these unions will not be recognized in our state, resulting in same sex couples being denied many rights, privileges, and benefits that heterosexual couples have long enjoyed.
However, nationwide voter trends and opinions point to change: Numerous states have already legalized gay marriage, and there has been unprecedented speed and interest in getting citizens and lawmakers interested in the cause. Wyoming gay rights activists across the state have been involved in numerous discussions and debates to plead their case. Additionally, at least one lawsuit has been filed regarding same sex marriage, including a case that seeks to have the state recognize marriages performed in other states.
Every loving couple deserves the right to have their marriage recognized and protected, whether they are attracted to the same gender or not. For now, many Wyoming residents are taking advantage of the opportunity to travel to one of the states that recognize gay marriage. However, this is a bittersweet victory for those who want their marriages recognized in the state they live in. Wyoming gay marriage rights are still in the future, but for many couples who have waited years or decades, marital equality rights may finally be just around the corner.
