Gay Marriage on the Alaskan Frontier

Alaska gay marriage laws have been struck down as of October 2014. This is according to state statute and a voter-approved constitutional amendment.

History

Alaska’s ban on gay marriage officially went into effect in 1996 after the governor failed to sign or veto the legislative bill. Two years later, the legislature passed a constitutional amendment denying gays the right to marry, a law that became effective after a voter referendum.

In 2007, the legislature drafted a resolution that denied homosexual couples from assuming any form of family or wedding status. The proposal was rejected. That same year, anti-gay forces pushed through another draft that would prevent partners of state employees from assuming benefits. This was also halted.

In October of 2014, the Federal Judge struck down the gay marriage ban in Alaska as well as Indiana, Nevada, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
