Freedom to Marry in Ohio

The 2010 United States Census reports that nearly 20,000 same-sex couples live in Ohio. While this number represents less than five same-sex couples for 1,000 households, two decisions made by a federal judge regarding Ohio Gay Marriage look favorably on homosexual equality when it comes to a wedding.

1. Death certificates. The law respects marriages of same-sex couples for the purpose of issuing death certificates. The decision is now on appeal.
2. Marriages performed elsewhere. Second, the law recognizes marriages of same-sex couples when legally performed in other states. The Attorney General is making a decision on whether or not the state will appeal.

In addition, a case was filed seeking the freedom to marry in Ohio. A decision is still outstanding.

Gay Parenting Rights

In 2004, anti-gay lobbyists pushed through an amendment excluding Ohio Gay Marriage. Furthermore, it bars them from attaining any other form of family status in the state. While single gay individuals are permitted to adopt, same-sex couples are prohibited from listing both names on the adoption certificate. Same sex couples, regardless of their marital status, cannot list names of the parents on the adoption certificate.

Advocacy Movement

Some of the major cities in Ohio permit domestic partnership registries for homosexual couples, providing some of the benefits that the freedom to marry affords opposite-sex couples. Four groups are actively working on marriage equality.

1. Equality Ohio. As a statewide organization, members envision a state of equality, inclusiveness, and diversity for all people, despite sexual orientation, expression, or gender identity.
2. Freedom to Marry. This nationwide campaign attempts to win marriage for same-sex couples.
3. Why Marriage Matters Ohio. This grassroots public education campaign builds support for Ohio Gay Marriage.
4. ACLU of Ohio. This state affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union is committed to standing up for equality for all Ohioans.

Ohio Gay Marriage supporters focus on the fact that the state seems to have forgotten what is at stake: the equality of its people. They believe that the law should provide wedding benefits for everyone, regardless of whether they are homosexual or straight.
